Stopping Phishing

One of the biggest threats to the growing ecommerce industry is phishing. Phishing attacks include spoofed emails and fraudulent websites designed to fool recipients into divulging personal financial data such as credit card numbers, account usernames, passwords and social security numbers. The number of phising attacks have been soaring in 2004. According to the Anti-Phising Working Group (APWG) there were over 6,000 new and unique phishing email messages reported to them in October. This was over three times the number of unique reports received in August and an average monthly growth rate of 36% since July. In October, there were 1,142 unique phising sites reported, which is an increase of more than two times over September and a month-to-month growth rate of 25% since July. The AWPG has a page that offers some great advice for helping consumers avoid phising scams. The AWPG's information is also helpful for merchants trying to inform their customers about phising scams.
